The Link Between Sleep and Low T

A man in a robe holds his head seemingly frustrated by not being able to sleep.Feeling less interested in sex? Well, you might want to sleep on it — literally. Sleep deprivation may be the reason behind your lack of sexual energy. In fact, studies show a link between lack of sleep and low testosterone. In this post, you’ll learn the importance of a good night’s rest concerning men’s health.

The Research Doesn’t Lie

Research studies show that lack of sleep results in the decreased production of testosterone in men. One of the most important studies was featured in the Journal of American Medical Studies, or JAMA. In this study, ten men were subjected to only 5 hours of sleep per night during an eight-day period.

The results were shocking. Participants saw their testosterone levels drop by ten to fifteen percent — with the highest drop-offs occurring later in the day.

The effects are especially apparent in cases of males with sleep apnea — a chronic condition in which a person’s breathing is disrupted while sleeping. Sleep apnea results in staggered sleep patterns, leading to lower levels of testosterone among affected males. But here’s the astounding news: curing sleep apnea is shown to shift testosterone levels back to normal.

A Cycle of Despair

The connection between sleep deprivation and low testosterone can be viewed as a circle rather than a straight line. This cyclical process is highlighted in the conclusions of many studies. Research has shown that men with below-average levels of testosterone are more easily disturbed during sleep. Furthermore, they have a harder time entering the REM (Rapid-eye-movement) phase, the most restful sleep phase.

Combating Sleep-Deprived Low Testosterone Levels

The best treatment is a combination of habit changes and medical consultation. On the personal side, you can

  • Go to bed earlier.
  • Don’t eat and drink right before bedtime.
  • Avoid the use of electronics before you go to sleep

Most importantly, you should schedule an appointment with a medical professional. A doctor will monitor you and diagnose a treatment plan personalized for your specific lifestyle.
