Signs Men May Have Low Testosterone

The hormone testosterone, though found in both male and female bodies, is commonly referred to as the “male hormone” simply because it is produced in larger amounts by males than females. It is responsible for a man’s sexual development as well as the maturation of male sex organs, mass muscle development, sperm production, hair growth, and voice deepening.

Testosterone levels decrease gradually over time and even though levels of low testosterone are more common in older men, it can also affect younger males causing issues in their own respects such as marriage trouble, low self-esteem, and more. To seek treatment, you must first know the symptoms.

Here is a glimpse of some of the signs of low testosterone:

Decreased libido and low semen volume

A drastic decline in your sex drive (combined with other symptoms) is an indication that your testosterone levels have dropped. This can affect your sex life at any stage of life including your marriage and attempting to become pregnant. Low semen volume is another indicator that the hormone responsible for generating semen is not working due to low production levels. You will notice the decrease of semen during ejaculation.

Hair loss and loss of muscle mass

Loss of facial and body hair is an indicator that the testosterone levels have gone low, although some men have natural genetic balding, low testosterone could be the cause. Same applies to the muscles. Since the hormone is responsible for muscle growth, lack of it will result in a decrease of the muscle mass although this may not affect your strength.

Erectile dysfunction

With a low amount of testosterone, it’s hard to achieve and maintain an erection. You may experience some random spontaneous erections which are another indicator that your hormone level is low. It is crucial to note that testosterone is just one of the factors that are responsible for an erection and failure to have an erection does not necessarily mean that your T levels are low.

Other symptoms that point to low testosterone include fatigue, sleep disturbances, increased body fat, and- in some men- increased breasts.

Treatment of low testosterone levels include testosterone supplements, lifestyle changes such as weight loss or healthy diet and exercise, as well as adding vitamin and mineral supplements to your daily routine. Make sure you see your doctor as soon as you notice the above signs and symptoms to see if you can work together to create a healthy plan to increase your testosterone production.
