How to Talk to Your Partner About PE

Two people are talking into a cups connected by string that forms a heart. People with health complications often feel isolated and cut off from support. Talking to a medical professional can be embarrassing, even though they have been trained to empathetically have those conversations. Even more isolating is the trouble many people feel in discussing issues with their partner, especially when the issue has to do with performance.

Instead, this can be a time to strengthen your relationship. This post will highlight ways you can support your partner who experiences premature ejaculation.

What is Premature Ejaculation

Before we get to the conversation pointers, let’s first go over what we mean by premature ejaculation (PE). This condition includes an inability for a man to delay ejaculation, especially less than 2 minutes after beginning stimulation. PE can occur with limited penetration or without penetration at all. Another common factor with PE is negative emotions connected to sexuality, including distress, frustration, or shame. Often the man will avoid sexual intimacy. PE usually leaves both the impacted man and his partner sexually unsatisfied.

Tip #1: Talk about PE Openly and Honestly

Many men want to hide or avoid the topic of their experience with PE. According to several studies, the more open and honest a couple communicates about the condition, the more effective they are at dealing working through it. The more involved a partner is in the conversational process, the more men feel supported. The support can end up leading to more sexual and non-sexual intimacy.

Create a space for him to talk through his experience without interrupting him. Then share your thoughts and feelings without passing judgment. Keep in mind, a man’s sexuality impacts other aspects of his life. Make yourself available to talk about it even if he is embarrassed and avoids the topic.

Tip #2: Be Empathetic and Understanding (No Jokes)

Understand that this is a tough experience for him. Avoid brushing it off, joking, or making light of the situation – this could worsen his experience with PE or cause him to avoid talking about it. Jokes could also lead to a dip in his self-confidence. When you treat the topic more seriously, he will feel more supported and more able to cope with it.

Tip #3: Learn More Through Research

Researching to learn more about PE can help you better understand what your partner experiences. Learning about the causes, symptoms, treatments, and impacts on him, the partner, and the relationship can all be helpful. You can also share this information with your partner to show you have an interest in his well-being.

Tip #4: Work Together and Be United

Working together to treat PE is important. You will both be working toward a stronger relationship and a more fulfilling sex life. Your love and support will take the performance piece out of being sexual together. You can’t snap your fingers and end his experience with PE – it is his job to work through it. But you can make sure he knows you are with him through this tough time.
