At What Age Does Erectile Dysfunction Start?

average erectile dysfunction age when ED starts

One of the most dramatic scenes in an action movie is the one depicting a rapidly-expiring countdown clock attached to a world-ending explosive device. The hero is racing to defuse it, save the day, and possibly earn a saga-ending kiss from a starlet. Even though we all know the most likely outcome, the anxiety exists all the same. Fortunately, since it’s a work of fiction, everything is preordained, and wrapped up within an hour and a half or so.

As we all know, real life isn’t anything like the stories that entertain us on the silver screen. It’s far more unpredictable, and the hero doesn’t always get to ride off into the sunset with an achingly gorgeous leading lady. Worse yet, when it comes to what age erectile dysfunction starts, many men view it as an inevitability—imagining their own ticking time clock counting down to the magical age when they’ll be rendered impotent.

Here’s the thing guys—there isn’t a hard and fast rule when it comes to an “erectile dysfunction age.” ED doesn’t start overnight as soon as you hit 50, 60, or even 80. In fact, plenty of men stay sexually active well into their golden years. On the opposite end of the spectrum, ED can strike down men in the prime of their 20s and 30s.

The truth is, while age is certainly a factor in the onset of common sexual dysfunctions, it’s far from the most influential. Happily, regardless of how many times you’ve journeyed around the sun, some of the more pressing causes of ED are within your control—which means you can start combating it starting right now. For most sexual dysfunctions, what actions you take in your personal life can serve to support the medical ED treatments that a trained specialist provides.

What Does Proper Erectile Function Mean?

To understand why age is just a number when it comes to ED, let’s quickly rewind  and review how an erection is achieved in the first place. While largely a biological process where medical treatment is critical to diagnosis and treatment to address the underlying health issues causing ED, there is also a significant psychological aspect behind arousal.

It all starts with signals from your brain, which travel down and notify the muscles and arteries throughout the penis to alternatively relax, and fill with blood. The result is a firm erection that will last you through ejaculation.

Erectile dysfunction, as one might expect, is defined by regular difficulty in achieving and maintaining an erection. That’s the obvious part—tracking down the reason behind your particular experience isn’t quite as straightforward.

Is There an Average Erectile Dysfunction Age?

at what age does a man stop getting hard ED

While not all men are guaranteed to experience ED, it’s still a widespread ailment, and one that overall does become more and more common as the decades go by. Naturally, more than a few studies have been conducted to determine whether there’s some universal age that erectile dysfunction effectively starts.

One study whose results still stands as the example with the most participants, providing fairly solid data. The authors surveyed over 31,000 male health professionals across the country and noted their responses regarding what age their male patients most struggled with ED. Four of the most pertinent results are outlined below:

  1. The largest group of men surveyed were between the ages of 60 and 69
  2. 74% of the men surveyed between the ages of 53-59 ranked their sexual function as either good or very good. This flipped for those men over the age of 80, as only 10% of those surveyed in this range marked similar ratings.
  3. How each group of men ranked their sexual desire followed a near identical pattern.
  4. About 25% of the men in the 50-59 group reported their first instance of ED. This increased to 40% in the 60-69 age range.

Looking purely at this data, it would make sense to assume that age has a significant impact on both your decline in sexual desire and increase in risk for ED. This isn’t the whole story, however.

What Factors Influence Erectile Dysfunction Other Than Age?

The researchers also took note of things like chronic diseases and less-than-healthy habits among the men surveyed. For example, men who suffered from ailments such as:

As well as those who have exhibited the following risk factors, like:

  • Antidepressant Medications
  • Alcoholism
  • Smoking
  • Overweight/Obesity
  • Lack of Exercise
  • Depression

…were far more likely to experience ED.

Men who participated who displayed none of the above also returned the relatively lowest rates of ED, no matter their age.

While we have no control over our bodies continuing to age, it’s important to consider how the underlying health issues we face can impact erectile dysfunction.
